A Women’s Prerogative

Naeem Kahn

Bright and early tomorrow the stars will begin primping and prepping – make-up, hair and various other spa treatments — for this year’s Oscar’s. Lots of thought went into selecting their favorite dresses, yet there’s no doubt that after seeing the amazing Fall 2014 collections starlets sent their stylists chasing down their new “must have” dress. After all it is a women’s prerogative!!

Here are the dresses from the recent collections I would love to see on tomorrow’s red carpet!

Clockwise from top left: Monique Lhuiller, Ralph Lauren, Roberto Cavalli, Kaufmanfranco, Julien Macdonald, Naeem Kahn, Giorgi Armani, Jenny Packham, Oscar De La Renta, Naeem Kahn. All are from the Fall/Winter 2014 collections.

Congratulations CFDA Winners!!

2013 CFDA WInners

Last night, at New York’s Lincoln Center, the Council of Fashion Designers of America held their annual awards ceremony celebrating the best and newest stars in American fashion, chosen by some of the biggest players in the industry (Diane von Furstenberg is president of the organization, which was founded by famed fashion and arts publicist Eleanor Lambert in 1963). Congratulations to Proenza Schouler who won for Womenswear Designer of the Year, Thom Browne for Menswear Designer of the Year, Phillip Lim for Accessory Designer of the Year, and the rest of the evening’s winners. (See the complete list of the 2013 CFDA Fashion Award winners – and who they beat out — below.)

The usual crowd of models (Miranda Kerr, Erin Wasson and Karlie Kloss), bloggers and stylists (Leandra Medine of The Man Repeller and Brad Goreski), and designers (Zac Posen and Rebecca Minkoff to name a few) attended the festivities. Though, there were a few personalities not usually associated with fashion too – Hillary Clinton (wearing a requisite pants suite) bestowed upon Oscar de la Renta the infamous Founders Award.
Of course, Hollywood made a presence with costume designer Colleen Atwood honored with the Board of Directors’ Tribute Award, and Jessica Chastain, Rooney Mara, Hailee Steinfeld and Mad Men’s Linda Cardellini were just a few of the actresses in attendance supporting the people who dress them.
All in all, a jubilant crowd (dressed to kill) having a fun and gratifying night honoring some of the top designers of the year.

Here’s To Remembering!! & An Uber Chic Memorial Day Look

Flowing Bomber Jacket $99.00 Moto Mini In Linen $118.00

MICHAEL Michael Kors Large Selma Top-Zip Satchel $358.00Drapery Lux Tank $58.99 spendid.com

Oscar de la Renta Circular Earring $175.00 Bernelle T-Strao Sandal $70.00

This Monday marks Memorial Day, the unofficial start to summer –  a day for picnics, BBQ’s and all around beach fun – weather permiting. Where I live, in Santa Monica, its scheduled to be in the mid sixties so we’re thinking a BBQ might be a better option. It will still be loads of fun (and more fun to dress for), and easier to stay warm!

I’ve curated the ideal look -the perfect ratio of casual and chic. It’s all built around my new must-have item- Zara’s embroidered flowing bomber jacket. Not only is it versatile, it clearly works for an uber chic, free and easy look, but it also can take an evening look and give it an edgy vibe.

I want to take a moment to remind everyone not to forget the real meaning of memorial day – a day set aside to honor those who died in military service. Please consider making a donation to Operation Homefront and Military.com.

What ever you decide to do this Monday, make it terrific and create exceptional memories!!

Delicious Autumn Covetables

I’ve been up in Bay area, specifically Palo Alto, this week, visiting my sister at Stanford Hospital – where I’d like to give all the nurses and doctors who have been so wonderful a huge shout out! The cooler weather and changing leaves on the trees reminds me that it is indeed autumn. One of the best things about the cooler weather is all the delicious fall clothes to bundle up in and that got me started on my list of this week’s covetables.

Once I spied Oscar de la Renta’s suede trimmed brocade ankle boots ($995.00 at Net-a-Porter), I knew they would be a boot to build a fall wardrobe around. Pair them with 3.1 Phillip Lim’s jodphur leather pants ($995.00 at La Garconne), Zara’s ribbed mohair sweater and Adrienne Landau’s merlot fox vest ($725.00 at Intermix) for a luscious, extremely cozy ensemble.

Try adding a cape for an updated, modern version of outer wear  – Rachel Zoe’s Candice Cape in army green (also comes in black) for $866.00 will carry you through this fall season and beyond in style. Lastly, Nina Ricci’s layered cuff leather gloves lend the perfect amount of edge and warmth to all of fall’s brisk days and nights.

Target Meet Neiman Marcus, Neiman Marcus Meet Target

They may make an odd couple, but discounter Target and luxury merchant Neiman Marcus are teaming up on a limited collection spanning from fashion to sporting goods for the upcoming holiday season.

More than 50 products from 24 CFDA finalists, including  Carolina Herrera, Derek Lam, Diane von Furstenberg, Jason Wu, Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta and Tory Burch will be available at both stores and on their websites starting Dec. 1 and runs until they sell out. Prices span from $7.99 to $499.99, but the majority of items will sell for less than $60.

The 2 companies are obviously aware of their differences, with Kathee Tesija, Target’s executive vice president of merchandising saying, “They’re high-end, and we’re mass appeal”. Target sells $25 dresses and generates almost half its revenue from staples like food and detergent, while Neiman Marcus has cultivated a reputation for expensive fashion, selling $1,000 shoes and $3,000 handbags. But, they have chosen to celebrate their commonality – they both love design!!

With the limited partnership both companies hope to grab a new segment of customers who are increasingly shopping around, checking out both higher and lower-price stores. Target, whose sales growth has been uneven since the recession, is seeking new ways to boost its fashion image. And Neiman Marcus, whose affluent customers are back to splurging, needs to step outside its comfort zone to stay competitive. By giving customers a reason to come visit their store for a first time, Neiman Marcus hopes they will discover it also sells more affordable items for under $100.

This time around in order to avoid more disappointed customers, like the ones they had when Missoni for Target sold out in ” the blink of an eye”, shoppers will be allowed to buy only a limited number of each item, though Target spokesman Joshua Thomas said the number hasn’t been set. Spread the wealth, sounds like a good idea!

More Resort 2013

Erdem Moralioglu cited the Amish and a photo essay called Las Mujeres Flores – about a German settlement in Mexico – as his inspiration for his Resort 2013 collection. Also on his pinboard were pictures of the Queen and of upper east side ladies, posing neatly on their upholstered sofas and armchairs. As he told Vogue, “ What I want to show is how someone can wear the collection in a serious, grown-up way, and how someone else can do it in a bonkers young way, too.”

He certainly attains both, with the silhouettes classic and sophisticated – a line and pencil skirts, sheath and shift dresses – he imbued them with vivid floral schemes, an abundance of embroidery and manical patchworks. He had a delightful time with lace – tone on tone lace applique dresses, see through lace sleeves and quirky touches such as lace collars and see through lace inserts.  A whimsical, wearable and never boring collection.

Oscar De La Renta has gone 24/7, his Resort 2013 collection’s program notes announced that the green and white sequined baseball t-shirt and the tulle and organza gingham skirt will be available for preorder immediately on TheFancy.com – he’s embracing social media. But having one’s eye on the future doesn’t mean he has abandoned his tried and true silhouettes.

What he has done is used exuberant prints (many of them floral), elaborate embroideries (many beaded) and all in an intense and broad range of color – carnation, iris, vermilion, peridot, evergreen, and a shade of cobalt blue dubbed “Pacific”. His fabric of choice for resort was homespun cotton, lending a sense of ease to the collection (even when it had thousands of sequins), featuring much more softer, relaxed pieces. When asked what his inspiration for the collection was, Oscar replied, “Making clothes”. And that was what he did; beautiful, well crafted, really good clothes.

Just Cavalli, Roberto Cavalli’s lower priced line, is a collection for the young, sexy, bold woman. Full of vibrant colors and the animal prints he is famous for, Cavalli also introduced print blocking – mixing mirrored florals (Venus flytraps and Garden of Eden palms) with his signature animal prints. My favorites were the floral printed jacket and dresses, along with the floral printed shorts paired with a leopard print blouse (shown above). I’m sure this collection will have a home in trendy, hot night clubs much as his signature collection has on red carpets everywhere.

Donna Karan’s secondary line, DKNY, embraced a monochromatic look save a few zebra print pieces – the best being the fuscia/scarlet/black printed skirt worn with a bold color blocked top (shown above). The major standouts were the flirty black party ensembles, one dress had tiers of feathers and lace and a beaded neckline, while another favorite was the lace tuxedo shorts suit. An all black flared trouser, satin blouse and duster is an elegant look perfect for work play, and gives you 3 awesome pieces to broaden your wardrobe. On the other end of the color spectrum was the on trend cropped blazer, tunic top and cropped taper pant combo.

It’s Oscar’s Time

Natalie PortmanChances are, the other Oscar nominee’s for Outstanding Lead Actress, Michelle Williams, Jennifer Lawrence and Natalie Portman, have chosen the dress they will wear to their big day tomorrow. But we would like to share what we would like to see them in-you never know, it is a woman’s prerogative to change her mind.

Though Michelle wore Valentino(top) to the Globes(not her best choice) we think this Valentino is vibrant, sexy and suits her to a tee. For Jennifer, the novice of the bunch, Versace’s(middle) silver seguin dress -with the racer back cut  that drapes in the back- is youthful and sophisticated at the same time.

Natalie Portman’s baby bump is getting bigger every day, so we thought this Oscar de la Renta with the empire waist will keep her comfortable and looking beautiful at the same time. Maybe the black feathers will bring her good luck-not that she needs it, she isn’t the front runner for nothing.

From top to bottom: Valentino Spring/Summer Couture 2011, Versace Fall/Winter 2011, Oscar de la Renta Fall/Winter 2011.
