Trend Report — The Best 10 Long Coats

Victoria BeckhamCiara

Kendall JennerRihanna

You might have noticed a new trend emerging among today’s “it” girls, models, editors and street style stars. Long coats are showing up everywhere, and are worn with just about anything (witness above).

What started out as the ideal coat to wrap your self up in when the temperature dips, has turned into a go to coat for any occasion. This trend is as equally fabulous when worn with distressed jeans and pumps, or pencil thin trousers/skirts and statements shoes, as it is with a pair of sneaks and shorts/minidress!

And, you can (Chloe’s awesome double breasted felted wool coat), but don’t have to spend a fortune to take on this hot new trend — Top Shop’s suede trench coat and The Laden Showroom X Zacro denim overcoat.

Below are my top ten long coats to perfect this latest awesome trend.

Now That’s How You Wear A Jean Jacket

Sarah Jessica ParkerMiranda Kerr

Denim jackets: practically an American institution unto themselves. And, definitely a must have to the fashion conscious among us. Gone are the days when it was cool to look as if you were donning your boyfriends (and most likely were) jacket. These days denim jackets are a cleaner slender look (see SJP and Miranda Kerr above). They’re fitted and cropped, embellished with feathers (a la Burberry), rhinestone and gems, or embroidered.

Me, I prefer the soft fitted with plenty of stretch versions —  AG Jeans, Robyn silhouette, being a favorite. Goes with everything, and is oh so soft! What’s your favorite?

Spring & Summer’s Best Dressed Celebs

Let me clarify what I mean when I say best dressed. It’s not someone who wears only designer clothes, one might be well dressed in beautiful clothes but could be lacking “style”, and to make anyone’s best dressed list style is something you need in spades.

Being a fashion icon means having a style all your own – one that represents who you are, speaks to your personality and lets your inner qualities shine through. Stylish people don’t care about a garments price tag, they do care how they feel when wearing it. They don’t need to wear one designer from head to toe, in fact they prefer to mix it up, combining designers with lower-priced labels (Gap, J Crew), even adding vintage and thrift store finds into the mix.

Most importantly, style icons take risks, they don’t play it safe, and they know what works for them and what doesn’t. Women everywhere want to emulate their fashion choices and find inspiration in their style. These 4 women – Sarah, Olivia, Alexa and Miranda – have a plethora of those qualities.

Sarah Jessica Parker has always been one of my favorite style icons. I’ve seen a few ensembles I didn’t care for (less than I can count on one hand) but they are heavily out weighed by the creativity and uniqueness in her everyday and night fashion choices.

Which of these stylish women do you admire? Or is it some other fashionable woman? Let me know!!

Get The Look For Less – Style Icon Diane Kruger

The crop top trend is back! It has made its way from the runway to the streets in a big way. But if you are a little worried about how to rock this trend in a dressy-chic (but not over the top) way, take a lesson from Diane Kruger. The enviable beauty, with abs any girl would die for, attended the French Consulate screening of Farewell, My Queen (opening on August 3) in LA. Donning a striped cropped tank and louche black trousers by Lucca Couture, strappy heels and snake skin clutch, Diane makes looking minimal and chic as easy as 123.

Shop my favorite looks for getting this refreshingly current look, ideal for warm summer nights, for less!

Summer Styling Tips

Allesandro Ambrosio looks summer ready in her Tolani print strapless dress. The mixture of prints is a great way to add a touch of pizzaz to a summer dress, but if you find this trend tricky to pull off you are in luck –  this  Tolani dress does it for you. The hi-lo hem updates a strapless silhouette with a modern and fresh feel.

Kelly Rutherford, seen here at a NYC screening for Farewell, My Queen, adds depth and a tiny bit of edge (while keeping it minimal) to a LWD by accessorizing with different shades of the same hue – tan and brown. Hermes handbag an Lanvin shoes.

Olivia Palermo, at Christian Dior’s Haute Couture show in Paris last week (in all Dior), proves that a leather top can be summer friendly. The key, keep the top sleeveless and pairing it with a pair of shorts helps to ensure your look reads summer not fall.

Jennifer Lawrence (in Dior), also at the Christian Dior Haute Couture show in Paris, does justice to the lady-like trend in the print du jour – florals. Choose a dress with a fuller skirt and a few inches above the knee to keep the look young and fresh. Keeping the floral print in one color will maintain that feminine feel.

Miranda Kerr takes basics and gives them a healthy dose of pizzaz. Her A.L.C cropped trousers get a face-lift with tuxedo stripes, giving her sleeveless Equipment shirt ensemble some serious sex appeal. Manolo Blahnik pointy toe pumps and Stella McCartney sunglasses take this sexy look and adds a shot chicness.

Michelle Williams at Comic-Con 2012, adds a pop of color to her black and white floral print Giulietta Resort dress with raspberry Giuseppe Zanotti platform heels. The trapeze silhouette needs a healthy flash of legs to keep it from becoming too matronly. Make sure the shoes are on the chunkier side to keep the dress fun and light.

Designer Report – MiH Jeans

As the designer and head of MiH, Chloe Lonsdale, grew up with denim in her blood. Her father, Tony Lonsdale, started the legendary Jean Machine stores in the seventies and married, Chekkie Maskell (her mother), a top denim model after they met at one of his catalog shootings. The denim link goes back even further as her grandfather launched Made In Heaven in 1969. In the `70’s her father bought a van full of old denim with the thought of selling them to trendy London boutiques. When no one bit, in an effort to salvage his dignity and profit, he opened a shop on King’s Road, he figured that if he sold the jeans within 3 months it would be okay –  they sold out within 3 weeks.

Chole, who has a fashion degree from Central St. Martins and trained at Nicole Farhi, reincarnated her grandfathers company 6 years ago with the name MiH, and it has taken off once again. In the `70’s their jeans graced the bums of Jane Birkin and Farah Fawcett and today they are favored by celebrities Sarah Jessica Parker and Claudia Schiffer, to name a few.

MiH (the oldest British denim company) whose motto hangs in an original MiH poster above the designers desk – ”  In 1969 when the world was busy putting man on the moon, here at Made In Heaven we were busy creating the best jeans on earth”. They take this motto seriously, hence they feel where they buy their  fabric and who makes their jeans are some of the more important ingredients in their jeans. The fabrics come from Europe,Turkey and Japan and the jeans are made in long-established, family run factories that have the highest social and environmental standards.

To further make sure they live up to their motto, MiH makes a portion of their jeans in selvedge denim. A type of denim treasured by die-hard jean fans as it is woven on old shuttle looms, and rope-dyed to a rich indigo shade in old dye machines. This traditional way of making jeans gives a gorgeous authentic look and divine feel, and makes sure your jeans age beautifully over time.

All of MiH’s Autumn/Winter collection is on sale at their website – mih-jeans.com. We’ve highlighted our favorites but their website is worth a look-see because there are so many more goodies.
