Monkey See: Dior & I

Dior & I

Dior & I

Honestly, with how much I adore the house of Christian Dior and Raf Simmons, I can’t believe I didn’t see the documentary, Dior & I, on the big screen. Don’t get me wrong it is still an engaging film, well worth the view on a smaller screen. But, what was I thinking??

Directed by Frédéric Tcheng, Valentino: The Last Emperor, and Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel, Dior & I, is an alluring behind-the-scenes look at the making of Raf Simmons first collection in 2012 as creative director for Christian Dior —  a haute couture collection no less, and Simmons first one.

With only eight weeks to complete the  couture collection, Simmons, his right hand man, Pieter Mulier (you’ll fall in love with this man), and his dedicated staff — especially the army of white-coated seamstresses who meticulously hand-craft the decadent creations —  work against the clock to create Simmons sublime vision.

Through out the highlighted design process, Tcheng infuses archival footage of Christian Dior discussing his style and mission. Fitting, since employees at the atelier often feel the spirit of Dior after many a difficult days work. He also inserts a sense of humanity into the documentary, one special moment being Raf Simmon’s jangled nerves, depicted on his face, as his designs were parading down the runway at last. So endearing.

Viewing such a breathtaking collection is always a special treat. But, viewing the final runway sequence after witnessing the painstaking work of the dedicated and faithful staff, from idea to fruition, gives one a greater appreciation for the exquisite results. I was ecstatic watching the final parade of dresses!
