In Need Of Some Inspiration

I thought I had a handle on my uneasiness regarding the election results, yet with the handing off of the baton last Friday emotions were stirred up again. Frankly, it zapped my creative energy, and I had turned to my security blanket, as it were, of sweats pants, cozy sweaters and Uggs the last few days. I was in desperate need of inspiration. Thankfully, the Pre-Fall 2017 collections are here and there are plenty of looks to spice up my sartorial senses.

Above are a few of the looks I will be drawing upon to add some zing back into my step when curating what to wear. Also, everything from Pierpaolo Piccioli’s superb second solo outing for Valentino. Especially those terrific over the knee boots paired with dresses sliced with a “touch of dreams”. Just what the country needs now.

Moving Through Your Fear

FullSizeRender-2

Now that the samples for my new small leather goods line (Kristin Ashford) are finished, the hard part, for me, starts: launching my Kickstarter campaign. When it came to designing and producing the bags, the days of trolling streets and websites in search of the perfect fabric, the hours of research, and the numerous trips downtown were fun, exciting and never daunting. Not even deciding to redo the inside lining gave me a moment of pause!

Yet, the notion of producing a crowd sourcing campaign, that is put together with as much expertise, and with such professional looking results, as the ones on kickstarter……has me quivering in my boots. Go figure?!

Lucky for me I have the talented and supportive, Mimi Fuenzalida,  to create the video, and a whole handful of other dear friends to thrust me through my fear.

Time Management On The Red Carpet

With the rise of the “Ask Her More” initiative, celebrities are demanding to talk about topics other than the clothes on their back while on the red carpet, especially when their time is so limited. With all the talented women that were housed under one roof at last night’s Golden Globes, surely there was more to discuss. After all, these women are actresses, writers, producers, activists, mothers and human beings that have not only created and participated in award-winning projects, but have lived full lives outside of the entertainment industry. It’s time to let the world know that too!

Yet, when you are loaned a dress worth thousands, and the jewels come with their own personal body-guard for the evening, those designers deserve to get acknowledged. Last nights pre-award’s host/hostess did a good job of keeping that portion brief, and delved into as many more substantial matters as the time allotted permitted.

After last night’s speech I’m sure no one will be making the mistake of asking Meryl Streep, “Who she is wearing?” Way to go, Meryl! You rock. (see below for speech)

Teresa Palmer in Armani Prive // Jessica Chastain in Prada // Mandy Moore in Naeem Khan // Louise Roe in Monique Lhuillier // Amy Adams in Tom Ford //Anna Kendrick in Vionnet // Caitriona Balfe in Delpozzo // Natalie Portman in Prada // Blake Lively in Atelier Versace // Thandie Newton in Monse

Stirring The Pot

revisionist-history

This year it’s about mixing things up. Changing the way you approach your free time. I’ve curated a list of ways to get the ball rolling and simplify the process for you. Try turning off the TV and listen to a podcast; camping in a decked out, luxurious Airstream trailor in lieu of a hotel; or listen to an autobiography audio book to put your self in someone else’s shoes rather than your normal radio stations. Who knows, this could be life changing!

Because sometimes the past deserves a second chance.

“He has explored how ideas spread in the Tipping Point, decision-making in Blink, the roots of success in Outliers, and the advantages of disadvantages in his latest book David and Goliath. In his latest project, Revisionist History, Gladwell examines the way the passage of time changes and enlightens our understanding of the world around us.”

Try tuning in to Revisionist History, a podcast from Malcolm Gladwell and Panoply Media. A 10 week series where Malcolm takes an event, a person, or idea, from the past, and reinterprets it.

Auto Camp

Inspired by the wanderlust of camping and the great American road trip, AutoCamp is a new type of outdoor lodging experience that’s unlike any other. The combination of  modern and luxurious Airstream accommodations along with their unique, decked-out properties in California (Santa Barbara and Russian River) create the ultimate outdoor camping experience for both casual and seasoned campers.

These iconic silver bullets are outfitted with queen-size Casper mattresses and soft linens; modern, sleek bathrooms with walk-in showers and vanity sinks; kitchenettes; and a flat-screen TV with cable and built-in sound system. Top-notch toiletries include Malin+Goetz bath products and cozy robes. All that, and gorgeous scenery to boot. Count me in!

baloons-over-atacama

The team behind Eastern Safaris: Balloons Over Bagan In Myanmar have now launched an exciting new product in the spectacular Atacama Desert of Northern Chile.  Balloons Over Atacama’s sunrise hot air balloon flights drift slowly over multi coloured and spectacular rock formations against a backdrop of distant snowcapped volcanoes. The makings of an experience that will never be forgotten!

The actual flight lasts 45 minutes, however, upon landing, while the highly trained flight crew is packing plan on enjoying a light champagne breakfast. The entire experience will last about 2 1/2 – 3 hours.

Theaster Gates Regen Projects

“Theaster Gates: But To Be A Poor Race,” Regen Projects, Los Angeles, CA, January 14 – February 25, 2017

“But To Be A Poor Race questions a particular kind of poverty, one that is not just about a lack of economic capital but one that is deprived of the basic elements from which one can make a living,” says Gates. For Gates, sculpture – as a derivative of the minor arts, craft, or the decorative and plastic arts – has been an important historical invention. Throughout Gates’ artistic career and especially during his time at the University of Cape Town in South Africa, the need for divine acts to have material and human vessels has undergirded his investigations. The exhibition begins to demonstrate Gates’ thoughtful handling of sometimes imagined African reliquary objects and other historic Black forms, referencing the power that can be honed from ‘poor’ materials. But To Be A Poor Race offers a salute to the possibility of power and beauty. ”

Gates is internationally renowned for his cross-disciplinary practice that spans sculpture, painting, sound, and performance. Featuring all new works, many of which will be created on site, this exhibition marks the artist’s continued investigation into the relationship between visual politics, shamanism, and object making.

Born To Run Bruce Springsteen

“Writing about yourself is a funny business…But in a project like this, the writer has made one promise, to show the reader his mind. In these pages, I’ve tried to do this.” —Bruce

Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run is not just an explanation of his vast record catalogue, and recalling of his many sojourns while touring the world many times over. While it does delve into those aspects, it is more of a raw, honest and in-depth telling of one’s life from an extremely self-aware man who has thought deeply about what his life experiences have meant. Listening to the audio version in my car, narrated by Bruce himself, was akin to having him personally tell me his story as I tooled around the streets of LA. Highly recommended. Thanks Bruce. I already miss you.

Can I Be These Ladies, Just For A Day

Alexa ChungAlexa Chung

Alexa ChungAlexa Chung

f I could have any of these style icons wardrobes I’d be hard pressed to choose just one. If pushed a little harder I, most likely, would select Alexa Chung’s. In a fashion sense I feel most connected to her. She’s classic, elegant with a touch of whimsy and rock n’ roll sensibilities to her style. The lady has spunk, class and a bit of edge.

Giovanna Battaglia EngelbertGiovanna Battaglia Engelbert

Giovanna Battaglia Engelbert Giovanna Battaglia Engelbert

The beautiful Giovanna Battaglia Englebert may have a designer wardrobe at her fingertips, but it is what she selects and how she wears them that makes her a style maven. She is sophisticated, chic and polished with out be stuffy. There is plenty of fun in her sartorial choices.

leandra-medineleandra-medine

leandra-medineleandra-medine

I don’t know her, but I imagine it would be about 10 minutes before Leandra Medine had me in stitches. Maybe less. Her wardrobe reflects a woman with a sense of humor and great taste. She is a master at mixing prints, and never shies away from taking a risk. I can’t remember how many times I’ve turned to her blog, Man Repeller, and her Instagram feed for inspiration. She is one in a million!

Monica Rose may not be as famous as the women she styles, but she has quickly become a household name for dressing the likes of Kendall Jenner, Gigi and Bella Hadid, Chrissy Teigen and more. She is responsible for setting the major trends of 2016. I’m sure this stylist will be a major presence for many more years. The rise of Monica Rose has just begun!

Sarah Jessica Parker has, and always will be a style favorite of mine. Hers is another closet I die to raid! She brings as much finesse to her casual, everyday looks as she does for her philanthropic and working events as well as the red carpet. She too, does not shy away from taking risks with her style, while always looking chic, modern and amazing!

Gifts Every Girl Will Adore

gifts-for-the-jewelry-obsessed

I don’t know a girl who doesn’t love jewelry as a gift. Not a one. Whether you are buying gifts for your mom, sister, BFF, or need to send this to your significant other for hints, this curated jewelry gift list has something for every personality type on your list.

For the rock ‘n roller in our lives there is Cynthia Desser’s Stingray tri-colored cuff, or Alexander McQueen’s Swarovski crystal and pearl Queen skull ring. Or, maybe you’re shopping for someone more classically refined? In that case, there is the vintage 1940’s bracelet with Cartier and Tiffany & Co. charms, or Pamela Love’s Gravitation stud earrings from her fine jewelry collection. For the person who lies somewhere in the middle, I suggest either Pamela Froman’s turquoise 18 K Crush earrings, or Finn’s Figa fist necklace made from coral with a dangling diamond. They are all beautiful and unique in their own right. Just like the recipients!

Stay tuned for more gift lists coming up this week!

Pamela Froman Turquoise “Crush” Earrings // Alexander McQueen Swarovski Crystal-Embellished Queen Skull Ring // Finn Figa Fist Necklace // Cynthia Desser Genuine Stingray Skin Bracelet // 1940s Gold Charm Bracelet with Cartier and Tiffany & Co.
