Sometimes, the adage less is more is just that, less. Sometimes, more is more is actually the better way to go. Take Michele Alesandro’s Resort 2017 collection for Gucci, it’s a mastery of brilliantly quirky looks that somehow defy reason and don’t seem excessive. And, when dissected lead to a plethora of stunning separates — ones to pair with and elevate all the basics in your closet.
Presenting in the cloisters of Westminster Abbey, with a heavenly choir singing the old folk song Scarborough Fair, Alesandro marched out 94 looks, mixing boys and girls. He continues down the path of his gloriously creative “attic chic” aesthetic with many looks taking on a Tenenbaum (to the nth degree) feel. There were leopard fur coats (long and cropped) with vibrant colored trim worn with acid washed jeans and sequin skirts; a skirt in a MacLeod tartan with a flaming King Charles spaniel worn with black lace stockings and a multicolored striped knit (with lace inserts) on which a cat sat comfortably in a sunburst; an embroidered oversized denim jacket with howling tigers, flowers and oversized owl eyes worn with a pleated floral and geometric printed silk skirt and ruffled calf height striped socks with high-heeled sandals. The handbags were classic yet all embellished, as were the belts (a favorite was the pearl studded butterfly), necklaces were ornate and grand with earrings oversized.
I could go on but I think you get the picture — a visual delight to behold.
With the days warming up I find myself turning to my trusted skirts. They lend themselves to any number of various occasions and can be more fun to play with than a dress!!
