Nicolas Ghesquière visited the Bob Hope estate in Palm Springs 15 years ago, and it’s impression must have been huge as he staged his latest collection (Resort 2016) at the estate. The John Lautner-designed house (which is for sale with an asking price of a cool $25 million) is 23,00o square-foot of a future vision – it resembles a grounded space ship- with home decor that Ghesquière described as a “sweet ’50’s style. “The paradox of the brutalism of the architecture and the refinement of the interior was quite inspiring to me,” he said. “I love the idea of sweet and hard at the same time.” After viewing the 51 piece collection one could indeed see how the vision of that home stayed within the recesses of his mind.
The show started at 6:15 on the nose, timed perfectly to coincide with the setting sun, casting the ideal glow on the models and the breathtaking valley views. Gone were the a-line mini skirts of the last few seasons, replaced with a collection made up almost entirely of flowing skirts and dresses supplemented with a few hot pants — high-waisted and cut high on the thigh. The 70’s influence was still present in the soft and billowing dresses/skirts, yet a few of the them brought to mind days of Camelot with their medieval chainmail-resembling embellishments or grommeted-leather shoulders.
The collection began with maxi skirts on desert boots paired with blousy cropped tops crisscrossed by leather belts that exposed a triangle of midriff; followed by skirts topped with futuristic looking leather jackets, cropped bomber jackets and a perfect black-tie beaded scuba jacket worn with loosely tailored pants.
The hot pants were worn with everything from an army sweater to zip-front silk blouses (my standout and must have) to a boxy suede jacket. Ghesquière finished the collection with magnificent laser cut leather dresses, a prairie dress cut with studded harnesses and ones fashioned from embroidered leather in tan and in black. The most perfect unique blending of romantic and rebel!
