Viva Italia!!

I wonder if the sun shining down upon Milan this past week (warm and sunny in February!) was a reflection of the brilliant clothes that paraded down the runways. Plenty of luscious fabrics – colored furs, lavish cashmere and whisper thin leather molded in to sleek, sophisticated silhouettes. All tainted with a clean sexiness like only the Italians can provide.

Dolce & Gabbana, amidst an enchanted forest (literally), sent out knights and ladies from a medieval fairy tale dressed in an array of whimsical delights. Vogue.com summed it up best, “It proved a clever, richly rewarding source of entertainment, gorgeously pretty clothes, and delightfully elaborate accessories. The ideas spun out: soft chain-mail hoods; bejeweled gauntlets and gloves; flat, pointy page-boy slippers and Mary Janes; tunics and capes naively appliquéd with squirrels, owls, hedgehogs, birds, and trees.”

A few standouts were a tailored black pleated skirt dress over cropped trousers (top left hand corner & my favorite), gauzy silk dresses with cinched corseted waists, a blue a-line shift dress with appliqued owls and a brown to-the-knee coat with black embroidery over leggings.

Gucci came out swinging, as in the sixties. Frida Giannini’s sporty, clean lined yet feminine collection concentrated on outerwear – double-breasted fitted cashmere wool blend peacoats and various families of furs (standouts were a rose-pink mink sweatshirt and “curly teddy bear” shearling coat), and mod a-line above the knee dresses. The entire color palette was an enviable lot of dusted-down pinks, greens, blues, and pops of rich burgundy and mustard yellow. I foresee a run on Giannini’s horse-bit emblazoned to-the-knee boots in python and patent leather with block heels, and the soft, capacious new version of the hobo bag on a multitude of shoulders.

“I felt the need to materialize the essence of Gucci. A longing for precision [and] clean lines.”  Gianni remarked from backstage about her intent for the collection, making this one of her strongest yet!
