How Does Mary Fare?

Can not wait to see what is in store for Downton Abbey’s Crawley family. Tomorrow night, January 5th, Masterpiece Theater airs the season 4 premiere at 9 pm ET on PBS. We pick up 6 months after the tragic death of Matthew, Mary’s (Michelle Dockery) husband, where she is mired in grief, and the venerable estate is engulfed in death taxes.

How long before Mary is back to her dignified self? Are new suitors in her future? How will the family lift themselves out of their financial woes? To save money, will the Crawley family lessen their staff and start fending a tad for themselves? Hmmm…over Robert’s dead body!!

All those questions and more will be resolved, yet what I’m most eagerly anticipating is the fresh body of costumes that London’s new era — the appearance of titillating jazz clubs and a sparkling literary scene — will likely bring about. And, as always, I look forward to what Violet, the Dowager Countess of Grantham (portrayed exquisitely by Maggie Smith), will say next.

Enter the Masterpiece Theater sweepstakes, and win a 5-day, 4-night trip for two adults from the U.S. or Canada to Great Britain.

Another luminous Masterpiece Theater program is the incredible Sherlock — the 3rd season premiere airs January 19th, 9 pm ET. Co-creaters, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss (Doctor Who), keenly and artfully morph the world’s most famous and only consulting detective (brilliantly played by Brendon Cumberbatch, Star Trek Into Darkness), along with his long-suffering faithful friend, Dr. John Watson (played by Martin Freeman, The Hobbit trilogy) in to the 21st century.

If you haven’t seen this not-to-be-missed version of everyone’s favorite oddly charming and dazzling smart detective, you have a few weeks to catch up (there are 3 roughly 100 minute episodes per season), and then tune in to watch how season 2’s cliff hanger resolves!!
