Grammy’s Fashion Winners and Losers

Last Sunday’s Grammy awards was chock full of talent but came up short in the style department. But there are always exceptions to every rule, and the ladies in black — Gwyneth Paltrow and Rihanna were the stars who shone brightest. Gwyneth was a modern-day Greek Goddess in her Stella McCartney super sleek gown with an extra dose of glamour added via a solid gold belt (Note to self – order Gwyn’s juice detox from GOOP). Rihanna’s Giorgio Armani gown was a throw back to Studio 54 and with its low-cut neckline and sexy high leg slit it takes a body that rocks –and rock it she did.

Embellishments, like in the Spring collections, made a strong showing and upped the glamour quotient for the evening. Jessie J looked stunning in a  Julian McDonald number that sparkled like a disco ball. Taylor Swift, in a Zuhair Murad gold high neck cap sleeved gown, looked the best I have seen her, and Katy Perry looked divine in a pale blue beaded Elie Saab gown with hair to match.

I’m sure there are some who think I’ve lost it in choosing Fergie’s Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture gown, but imagine the dress with a skin colored, form-fitting layer underneath, and the beauty of the brilliant color, the lace and the craftsmanship in the silhouette will shine through.

Anne Vyalitsyna, a Victoria’s Secret model, may have a body that was made in heaven but when it comes to style she missed the boat. I realize she is used to modeling lingerie but was it really necessary to show her bikini line? While I am a big fan of the high/low look so popular this season, Robyn’s dress looked as if it was unfinished, and those platform hiking boots were dreadful. There aren’t words to describe songwriter Bonnie McKee’s frock (not sure what she was wearing), and Sasha Gradiva’s uzi arm piece needs no words.

Best – Clockwise from top left: Gwyneth Paltrow in Stella McCartney, Rihanna in Armani, Katy Perry in Elie Saab, Fergie In Jean Paul Gaultier, Taylor Swift in Zahair Murad, Jesse J in Julian McDonald.

Worst- Anne Vyalitsyna, Sasha Gradiva, Songwriter Bonnie McKee, Robyn.
