Fall 2012 New York Fashion Week — Part 2

Joeseph Altuzarra, the winner of the 2011 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, declared backstage at his commanding show, ” It was really about mixing it”. Altuzarra’s collection, another one of my favorites,  ambitiously combined such ethnicities as forties Parisiennes, 19th century Italian heros, Berber Moroccan carpets and Indian hippie-market coin embroidery for a deft, all-around successful hit show.

This fall, Alexander Wang, rose to another level with all the elements of strong, and innovative designs that comprised a powerful and mature collection. He combined the color de jour — red, leather and fur with such imagination that left the audience craning forward, engaged and curious from first look to last.

I was not familiar with designer Mandy Coon until last weeks New York’s fashion shows, but I can guarantee it won’t be one I’ll forget in the future. Her prints are vivid and eclectic — the moth wing print, which had a kaleidoscope effect and was used throughout the show, and will be  on many a I must own this list . Pleats were a recurring motif and when a panel of black leather pleats was shown on a short navy circle skirt the look was fun and sexy. When it came to positives, the collection was full of them.

I was delighted to see Donna Karan coming back to such unique, strong, sexy dresses in her mens wear influenced collection. She sites as her inspiration her late husband, Stephan Weiss, and the night before the show Karan declared, “This collection is very much about the sculpture of his work and how it affected my life, he empowered me, and he’s always with me.” That pretty much sums up her collection — empowering!

No slouch to dresses herself, Carolina Herrera — whose dresses are a red carpet favorite of Renee Zellweger –  is a master of elegant, refined day dresses and glamorous but never boring gowns. She focused on reinventing the sheath dress this season and produced dresses in a palette of deep navy, mulberry, indigo, lilac, and that were variously cut from tweed, grosgrain, double-faced wool or jacquard silk . My favorite gowns were the eye-catching print piece (see above) masquerading as walking modern art  and the soft, robelike coat worn over a gown which was casual cool and glamorous simultaneously.

As New York packs up it’s runways and London has launched their collections, I leave you with a few of my other favorites Fall 2012 looks.

Ever wondered if money were no object what you would buy? Of course we’d all love a fancy yacht or house on the beach, and in the world of fashion the possibilities are endless and quite inspiring. Life is about setting goals and pursuing them…if there’s something you always wished you could own, maybe now’s the time to get a piggy bank for a rainy day splurge.

Not long ago Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen double-handedly sparked a craze for over super-sized bags, but when it came to designing their own collection for The Row the duo did things on a smaller (though no less luxurious) scale. Minimal hardware, sleek structure and not a label in sight, this matte lizard tote exemplifies the refined aesthetic of the line. $5,450; at Barneys New York.

Irene Neuwirth’s Gold Lockets Set with Diamonds and Gems is the perfect luxury for the sentimental at heart. The eternal design has been given a glam update with gorgeous semi precious stones and diamonds that cover her golden lockets, making these pieces ready for pictures of cherished loved ones. $12,360 to $22,880.

Balmain’s embroidered skirt with mirrors is Ziggy Stardust meets the tribal trend in this edgy embellished work-of-art. The skirt is hand-embroidered with mosaics of mirrors, fringe, crystals and ribbons. It’s no wonder this Parisian label has become the house of cool girl couture.$15,100.

Christian Louboutin’s Piou Piou 85 python pumps measure 3.5 inches of pure eleganceChristian Louboutin strikes design gold with these sophisticated heels, with a rainbow-bright splatter effect that’s right on trend for the color trends of Spring. Get The Look For Less: Rachel McAdams

Rachel McAdams, arriving at the BBC 1 studios in London to promote her new film The Vow, cuts a dapper figure in a collarless buckle-clasp wool coat by The Row. Underneath her divine coat Rachel wears a flirty black skater dress with a leather peter pan collar by Lover and nude Brian Atwood pumps with ankle straps.

Rachel’s personal style is casual (except for when on the red carpet) and her love of vintage pieces reflects her appreciation of the past. “Most of my fashion sense growing up was from my mum, who’s a beautiful lady, so I guess I have her to thank for any of those inclinations.” Her style tip for life is to always, “Wear what you love. I think clothes always look the best if you’re enjoying what you’re wearing and you feel good in it. That’s all that matters.”

The Vow, which opens February 10 and also stars Channing Tatum, is bound to be another romantic blockbuster for Rachel and who knows, may make Channing Tatum this generation’s next leading man.

Check out our finds to get Rachel’s look for pennies on the dollar.

Ashley & Mary Kate Olsen Debut Their New The Row Handbag Line

Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, designers of The Row, celebrated the launch of their new The Row handbag collection at a cocktail party at Barneys New York/Manhattan last Wednesday, July13th. They were joined by their younger sister Elizabeth and such celebrities as Sarah Jessica Parker and Christy Turlington.

The collection debuts in August and will be sold exclusively at Barneys New York. The collection’s nine handbags are made up of  a tote, backpack, doctor bag and classic shoulder bags, and are primarily made from luxury skins python and alligator. There is even a mini handbag with one side ostrich and the other python which carries a hefty price tag of $4700.00, the least expensive of the collection. The most expensive being the crocodile backpack which rings in at a staggering $35,000 – which is our definition of insane. We loved the vibrant, nature inspired colors and the beautiful hardware, and that the designs are all classic styles.

Barneys’ Fashion Director Amanda Brooks told Fashionista’s Leah Chernikoff , “Obviously we don’t carry Hermès bags in the store so we were trying to find something that appeals to that customer who is willing to spend a lot of money on a bag that’s going to last a long time and has a classic design…I think if you were every going to spend $35,000 on a bag, that’s the bag you should buy because I think you’d wear it for a really long time. There’s enough design to make it interesting and beautiful but they truly are classic bags–and I think you also might be the only one who has it.

You and the other two ladies who have pre-ordered the backpack (no lie).

Designer Profile: The Row-Ashley & Mary Kate Olsen

The Row, which was launched in 2007, when Ashley Olsen and Mary Kate Olsen were on a mission to make the perfect T-shirt-what resulted was a capsule collection of leather leggings and a few, french seamed, t-shirts. Little did anyone know that within a few years, The Row, which is ” majorly manufactured in the USA”, would be selling in over 130 of the most exclusive retailers of the world.

The Olsen’s aim with The Row, is to offer “an updated concept of bespoke tailoring, to modern-day classics” and that is exactly what they have accomplished. Their Spring 2011 collection, where the pantsuit was still front-and-center and still just as smartly cut, also contained exquisite, bias cut chiffon slip-dresses and silk gowns and introduced baby pinks and peaches to their customary white and blacks.

For Fall/Winter 2011, they stepped up their game, with a collection-that continues their forray into color-of  luxe pieces, such as a Persian lamb jacket with a kicky peplum that was paired with matching bordeaux velvet pants and a cashmere and mink cropped sweater shown over a slim lace skirt. Tailoring remains a key element of the collection; if they’ve relaxed the silhouette of the pants, the jackets are as sharp as ever and there was a small move away from the minimalism that’s defined their previous collections.

With their Fall/Winter 2011 collection, the Olsen twins, who also design Elizabeth and James-a more casual, trendier yet timeless collection-and its  capsule collection Textile-denim and tees, have won over even the most hard-core fashion skeptics with their luxe, American sportswear.
