Designer Profile – The Miller Sister’s Twenty8Twelve

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen of The Row and Elizabeth & James, and Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte – seems like the sister act in fashion is a lethal combo and Sienna and Savannah Miller of Twenty8Twelve are no exception. “Savannah made Sienna’s first fancy dress costume at the age of eight, their respective obsessions were acted out from day one with Savannah knitting on pencils while Sienna wrote plays at every spare opportunity” and without them even knowing Twenty8Twelve (Sienna’s birthday) by s.miller was born.

Growing up, Savannah, who graduated from fashion school Central St Martins and gained experience working for Alexander McQueen, always had a willing participant to fit her designs on and they found that their ideas and approach to work were on the same page. When approached by Spanish entrepreneur, Carlos Ortega, they seized the chance to turn their dream in to a reality – Twenty8Twelve was born.

The sisters named their Spring/Summer 2011 collection Jericho, inspired by Joni Mitchell’s album Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter. Their road tripping muse is completely at home in the collection’s bibbed denim shirts, flounced cheesecake skirts, a fringed suede dress, and a canary yellow lace shift. Savannah actually sourced the paisley print that was cut into a poolside-bound halter dress at a vintage store in Colorado.I think we really crossed borders,” said a chipper Sienna backstage at the Spring/Summer show, “There’s something for the working girl, the casual girl, the festival girl, the London girl.”

Twenty8Twelve has been growing at a steady pace – they recently opened their third boutique in London and the growth has spilled over into their work. The Fall 2011 collection, my favorite so far, didn’t have much of a theme other than a Parisian flair with a touch of beatnik chic. Instead, Miller described the collection best as a “perfect capsule winter wardrobe.”

Trend Report: The Monokini

It’s that time of year again, where women hit the gym hard in anticipation of wearing the ultimate summer garment-the swimsuit. The trend in swimsuits this Spring/Summer 2011 is not the one piece or bikini, but rather, the monokini.

The monokini takes its design from the bikini, and is also described as “more of a cut-out one-piece swimsuit.” with designers using fabric, mesh, chain, or other materials to link the top and bottom sections together, though the appearance may not be functional, but rather only aesthetic.

Rudi Gernreich was the inventor of the original 1964 monokini which, while astoundingly controversial, was technically nothing more than a one-piece cut off just below the bust with a couple of supporting straps.

Be sure to wear loads of sunscreen when wearing a monokinin…or you’ll be in for a tan-line surprise!

Denim Trend- More Than Just Blue Jeans

The first denim pant, developed by 24-year-old German immigrant Levi Strauss, was made during the height of the ‘Gold Rush’ when he discovered the need of “sturdy” pants for the miners. He fashioned a pair of waist overalls, using the canvas he was selling for wagon covers and tents. Strauss switched to a twilled cotton cloth from France called ‘Serge de Nimes’, when the miners complained of chafing. It later became known as denim and the first pair of blue jeans was born.

Levi Strauss and Nevada tailor David Jacobs came up with the process of putting rivets in pants for strength. On May 20, 1873, they received U.S.Patent No.139,121. This date is now considered the official birthday of “blue jeans”.

Boy, has denim changed since then, and it is no more evident than in the collections of Spring/Summer 2011. From designers as big as Stella McCartney to the  more mainstream J Crew, everybody is in on the trend-Levi Strauss has even teamed with Opening Ceremony designers, Humberto Leon and Carol Lim, to reinvent the classic looks they love from Levi’s archives.

With ‘Bubble-Gum’ pinks being the latest trend in jeans, color has even honed in on the act. No matter what you fancy-from accessories to dresses, traditional denim to the more outrageous-this Spring/Summer, denim has something just for you.
