Target Meet Neiman Marcus, Neiman Marcus Meet Target

They may make an odd couple, but discounter Target and luxury merchant Neiman Marcus are teaming up on a limited collection spanning from fashion to sporting goods for the upcoming holiday season.

More than 50 products from 24 CFDA finalists, including  Carolina Herrera, Derek Lam, Diane von Furstenberg, Jason Wu, Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta and Tory Burch will be available at both stores and on their websites starting Dec. 1 and runs until they sell out. Prices span from $7.99 to $499.99, but the majority of items will sell for less than $60.

The 2 companies are obviously aware of their differences, with Kathee Tesija, Target’s executive vice president of merchandising saying, “They’re high-end, and we’re mass appeal”. Target sells $25 dresses and generates almost half its revenue from staples like food and detergent, while Neiman Marcus has cultivated a reputation for expensive fashion, selling $1,000 shoes and $3,000 handbags. But, they have chosen to celebrate their commonality – they both love design!!

With the limited partnership both companies hope to grab a new segment of customers who are increasingly shopping around, checking out both higher and lower-price stores. Target, whose sales growth has been uneven since the recession, is seeking new ways to boost its fashion image. And Neiman Marcus, whose affluent customers are back to splurging, needs to step outside its comfort zone to stay competitive. By giving customers a reason to come visit their store for a first time, Neiman Marcus hopes they will discover it also sells more affordable items for under $100.

This time around in order to avoid more disappointed customers, like the ones they had when Missoni for Target sold out in ” the blink of an eye”, shoppers will be allowed to buy only a limited number of each item, though Target spokesman Joshua Thomas said the number hasn’t been set. Spread the wealth, sounds like a good idea!

Jewel-Tone Suede Heels

Sky-high heels in deep, rich colors are all the rage and will give a sultry lift to holiday dresses and mini-skirts this winter season. Some stylists have actually characterized jewel-tones as the new neutrals because the concept of color-blocking has become such an easy way to mix bold colors together.

Suede is what gives a great jewel-toned heel added warmth (and makes the shoe different from summer-time deliveries). Staying away from the typically safe neutrals like brown and black is what is going to take that LBD to the next level and give your winter wardrobe a perfect punch of fun and color.

Designer Spotlight: Alexis Bittar

A favorite designer among many celebrities including Anna Paquin, Jennifer Aniston and even Michelle Obama–Alexis Bittar has been described as “one of the greatest jewelry designers of the 21st century”.

In his early years he made money selling his creations, antique jewelry and clothing on the streets of lower Manhattan. Soon after, Bittar’s bold and colorful designs were discovered by Dawn Mello, fashion director of Bergdorf Goodman–whom offered Bittar his first opportunity into the world of high-end retail. From there Bittar took off and has now collaborated with many designers in the high fashion world as well as the Museum of Modern Art and the Cooper Hewitt Museum.  Through his use of lucite and rare elements he truly creates wearable works of art.

His collection is available at Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and throughout his retail stores.

Rachel Zoe’s New Line Hits Stores

“Style is what one creates…glamour is a state of mind.” -Rachel Zoe

Calling all Rachel Zoe fans–the celebrity stylist’s new clothing line is arriving in stores now!  According to Women’s World Daily, the complete list of retailers stocking Rachel’s first collection — which features clothing, handbags, and shoes — includes Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Nordstrom, Saks, Bloomingdales, Shopbop.com and New York boutique Kirna Zabete. Quite impressive for a first collection.

Rachel made a name for herself among celebrities and high-profile personalities by singlehandedly bringing the vintage movement into fruition with her devotion to the style eras of the 1960’s and 1970’s. Her love and knowledge of haute couture coupled with her desire to create the unexpected red carpet moments by adding prints, color and avant-garde trends made her the go-to stylist for the Hollywood elite.

Zoe told WWD, “I’d imagine everybody is expecting something from me that’s kind of a Seventies, uberboho-glam kind of thing, and, you know, very accessorized. And it’s not.” Instead the line is classic, sophisticated, clean-lined and extremely chic.

Mad Men Style

Mad Men is a show set in 1960’s Manhattan. Life is fun and exciting, men are men and women are women but life is changing. Mad Men is all about the lives of the men of Madison Avenue advertising firm Sterling Cooper–but you just can’t help but notice the women. They are strong, sexy and provocative and of course they have a fantastic wardrobe!

Celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe admitted that she hardly sits down in front of the television but that if she had to style one series it would, in fact, be the AMC hit. “I’d have to say ‘Mad Men,’” she confessed. “But I wouldn’t change a thing. I think the styling is fantastic….The overall tone of it and the period it was in, it’s a period I’m a fan of.”

In fact, Katherine Jane Bryant who is the actual stylist behind the series hasn’t received nearly enough credit for her work on Mad Men–having recreated the styles that have influenced many contemporary designers in a huge way. The 60′s have and will continue to have a big comeback.

Fashion in the early years of the 1960s reflected the elegance of prominent figures, like Jacqueline Kennedy and movie stars such as Audrey Hepburn. Women wore suits, usually in pastel colors, with short boxy jackets, and over-sized buttons. Simple, geometric shift dresses were in style for day and in terms of  evening wear, full-skirted evening gowns were worn with tight-fitting waists. For casual wear, Capri trousers and pencil skirts were a common look for the fashion for women and girls-and denim was pretty much only worn for gardening. The alluring glamour of the 1960s stewardess has never quite lost its sizzle.

Here are some of our favorite looks for the pre-fall season to get the “Mad Men” look.

From My Closet Yo Yours – Styling Tips By Kristin

The Little Black Dress

While Coco Chanel may not have invented the little black dress (though we believe she did), she is responsible for its popularity and its iconic standing. As she so famously said,”Women think about all colors except the absence of color. As I have said before, black has it all, white too. Their beauty is absolute.”

Every closet needs at least one LBD for each fall and springs seasons. It can be wool, cotton or a jersey knit, what is important is the silhouette. The most popular are the sheath dress which comes in at the waist and usually is a pencil skirt, and the shift dress which has little to no waist shaping.

If you are adding your first LBD to your wardrobe, I would stick with the sheath and/or shift silhouette with little or no detail. Don’t worry, it won’t be limiting, a change of accessories can take it from day to evening. After you have those staples in your wardrobe you can branch out from there, adding texture, detail and silhouettes. For instance, a more romantic style would be fitted through out the top and loose layering or fluted pleats of chiffon, silk or lace on the bottom.

As always, Happy Shopping!!
