Cannes Fashion Still Going Strong

The movies, festivities and jaw dropping fashion continue at the 66th Cannes Film Festival. Nicole Kidman once again WOWS in a strapless blue printed L’Wren Scott (from their public displays of affection, her husband Keith Urban agrees completely), and in a jaw dropping leather 3/4 length Calvin Klein Collection dress.

Naomi Harris and Sonam Kapoor delighted in Dolce & Gabbana, as did Jennifer Lawrence and Marion Cotilliard in Christian Dior – the ladies go to designer. Nieves Alvarez upped the glamor quotient in the breathtakingly beautiful Ralph & Russo couture gown!

Hollywood, actors, models and directors from around the world descended upon the French Riviera yesterday. The 2013 Cannes Film Festival will showcase over 90  movies – with about 20 films competing for the Palme d’Or, from May 15th to May 26th. Yet movies aren’t the only draw at Cannes, hundreds of gowns will grace the red carpet. Between all the many screenings, cocktail parties and charity events, celebrities can make up to 3 changes a day – Nicole Kidman donned Alexander McQueen, Christian Dior and Dior Haute Couture, and looked divine in each one!

Here are a few of my favorite look from day 1 of the 66th Cannes Film Festival.

More Musings On Paris Fashion Week

Alexander McQueen Fall 2013Alexander McQueen Fall 2013 1Alexander McQueen Fall 2013 2Alexander McQueen Fall 2013 3

I doubt I could describe Alexander McQueen’s latest foray on Fall fashion any better than vogue.com’s Mark Holgate, so I won’t. I’ll leave it to his summation of the collection which captured my reaction distinctly, “Sometimes, like at the small but absolutely exquisite Alexander McQueen presentation shown at the giddy-making gilded splendor of the Opéra Comique, fashion is about that moment when, what you are seeing before you is so magically transportative that you catch your breath, then forget to breathe out; that it goes beyond any kind of cerebral comprehension and instead causes an intense and instant emotional connection. And to think that Alexander McQueen creative director Sarah Burton did all this with just ten looks. Of course, those ten were worked and finished to levels of near indescribable perfection.”

I can only add that the collection was a  delightful mash-up of the Virgin Queen, Elizabeth I meets Alice In Wonderland. Pregnancy must have kicked her already sublime imagination in to over drive!

Christian Dior Fall 2013Christian Dior Fall 2013

Christian Dior Fall 2013 3Christian Dior Fall 2013

Another favorite outing in Paris was Raf Simmon’s 3rd collection for the Christian Dior house. A whimsical collaboration of classical design silhouettes (he introduced a softer feel, think more jazz age less rat pack) married to the lyrical paintings of Andy Warhol’s fashions and shoes, the precursors to his infamous Pop work.

The classic Bar suit was made this season in wool that mimicked denim, and Dior’s love of dramatic, asymmetric draperies was taken in a contemporary direction with hemlines sliced on the diagonal. Taking the old and making it new, embroidering your name on the fabric of the storied house with out demolishing the very structure it was built on.

Perhaps, Heidi Slimane, could take a lesson on how to leave his thumbprint without camouflaging the Yves St.Laurent line into a look and feel it will never, nor should, wear comfortably.

A sampling of my other favorite exits from Paris Fashion Week.

Last Night’s Oscar Fashion Standouts

Charlize Theron Christian Dior CoutureJessica Chastain Armani Prive

Reese Witherspoon Louis VuittonKerry Washington Miu Miu

Olivia Munn MarchesaNaomi Watts Armani Prive

Anne Hathaway PradaJennifer Garner Gucci

Salma Hayek Alexander McQueenJennifer Lawrence christian Dior Couture

Last night’s red carpet looks were a tad on the safe side yet with the 85th Oscar telecast holding no surprises and somewhat of a snooze fest, the pre show extravaganza outside Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre was the most memorable part of the evening.

Though there were not many fashion risks to be found – the most unique look was Naomi Watt’s gorgeous one shouldered beaded Armani Prive gown; she was simply dazzling – there was plenty of old Hollywood glamour and glitz (Jessica Chastain and Reese Witherspoon) along with a myriad of today’s more modern silhouettes. My other two favorites, Charlize Theron and Jennifer Lawrence in white Christin Haute Couture, were not only absolutely stunning but looked so fresh and chic!

Statement necklaces were one of the evening’s jewelry trends, but if the ladies choose to forgo necklaces they usually partook in heavily carotted bracelets and earrings. My to-die for accessory look of the evening was Ms. Lawrence’s Chopard forever long diamond strand necklace worn down her back!

The evening’s hair styles were mostly side parted with long, loose waves or softly pulled back with loose tendrils. The stand out exception was Charlize Theron’s pixie style hair cut – who but her and Audrey Hepburn could look so beautiful with so little hair. My only beef with the night’s hairstyles was the loose and sexy look on so many seemed to come off as just plain messy. And, where were the hairstylists backstage?? Too many beautiful ladies with not so beautiful unkempt hair!

Did I capture your vision of the Oscar’s best dressed? Did I miss your favorites? Let me know what you thought of last night’s fashion.

Trend Report – Accentuate The Waist

This fall is all about accentuating your waist, it’s the trend to emulate this fall – the hour-glass figure of the ’40′s and ’50′s. Think Bridget Bardot (20″ waist) and Elizabeth Taylor (21″), who both managed to have the tiniest of waists while still looking wonderfully feminine and soft, not at all sickly skinny.

Helping to define this trend are peplums, panniers and skirts that add a little padding to the hips (remember Kate Middleton’s Alexander McQueen wedding dress) which designers across the board have taken to with an affinity.

No matter what you fancy, be it tops, dresses or skirts (how fun is the Acne pencil skirt with the shearling peplum), there is a look out there this fall that gives you that nipped in waist vibe. Can you say VA VA VOOM!!

If I Could I Would – My Covetables

One of my favorite days is the day I get my September issue of Vogue. All of its 5 Lbs is glorious and is my favorite reading of August. Every page is the most delicious eye candy and the inspiration for my list of covetables.

Indeed, my list is quite extravagant but if I could, I would add them to my wardrobe in a heart beat (a girl can always dream, can’t she?). Owning any one of these items a fashion junkie, such as myself, would think she had died and gone to heaven. Take the Alexander McQueen matte leather mini-bustle jacket, you could wear it with just about anything and be the envy of every style maven out there. Or the Balmain pearl studded skinny pants, I have ached for those since the moment I laid eyes on them – heavenly with the cashmere sweater it walked the runway with. Speaking of which, the Dolce & Gabbana embroidered corset would be perfect with fall’s wide leg trouser pants or uber sexy with a pencil skirt.

Maiyet, Charlotte Olympia….I could go on but suffice it to say, my coveting cup runneth over…… BIG TIME!

In Honor Of London – Union Jack Goodies

In honor of the Summer Olympics’ host city, London, I’ve curated a selection of a few Union Jack logo goodies. The Gold Medal goes to, of course, Alexander McQueens mini box clutch with a not-so mini price tag of $1,157.00. ASOS’s Rolling Stones Union Jack tongue T-shirt takes home the silver, and it’s a tie for the bronze, between Juicy Couture’s taxi charm and Jimmy Choo’s Union Jack sunglasses.

Good Luck to all of the amazing athletes participating in the Games!! I’m off to watch the opening ceremonies!

Paris Fall/Winter 2012 Collections

For this year’s Alexander McQueen spring collection Sarah Burton gave us colors of the sea – beautiful blues and corals. For Fall 2012 Burton takes us far into the sea and gives us various anemones disguised as fashion. Sarah’s visions for fall were encased with thoughts of ” a beautiful future, positivity and optimism”. Like an under water dream, designs made from organza, marabou feathers and layers upon layer of tulle floated down the runway.

The beginning consisted of “pods”, short shaped skirts, with decoration embedded in the fabric which turned into “doilies” of laser-cut ponyskin mounted on leather, and finally fur pompoms. Then the pods exploded, like puffballs, into extravagantly shaggy shapes in goat fur, ostrich feather, or Mongolian lamb. Referring to a show that didn’t delineate a rational working wardrobe for fall, Burton said, “I think it’s the icing on the cake of what we do, you want something magical”. Magical it was.

But Burton is not one to leave any stone unturned. She delivered, at the temporary Paris atelier, racks of the practical, wearable commercial collection which reflected the ideas that glided down the runway — everything from jeans to floral knitted sheath dresses, pastel tailoring, and curvaceous coats and jackets.

Besides McQueen, Haider Ackerman is a designer that has always delivered for me and his fall 2012 collection was no exception. More body conscious than spring — note the wide, molded leather belts that cinched in the waist — the collection was dominated by full-bodied Melton wools, Mikado shantung, satins and rough-textured leather which Ackerman molded into very sexy and modern ensembles. The master of draping and color didn’t disappoint, there was a paprika satin blouse and mustard peplum worn with a berry-brown wool jacket and skirt that was divine, and an eggplant shantung 7/8 coat with smoke-gray satin pants and a chestnut blouse flourished with a bois-de-rose scarf to die for. His folds and drapes were those that could only be made by a master technician, they seem so natural and easy as if that was how nature would have them fall.

Pier Paolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri have come into their own at Valentino this fall.  The overall concept for their fall collection, according to the designers, was “folk, but in a modern, faceted way.” They have been modernizing their sweetly feminine silhouettes — black leather gave the duo’s by-now familiar dresses and jumpsuits a new edge — and are designing for a more natural less perscriptive kind of beauty. I look forward to their future envisions for the Valentino woman.

The following are a few of my other favorite looks from Paris.

Trend Report — Flirty Peplums

Peplums, on skirts to tops to dresses, invaded the Spring runway in a major way and it looks like this super-flirty trend will be around through Fall/Winter 2012. Take a look at my favorites on the market right now, and pick your poison.

I’m lovin the pale pink Zara peplum dress for when I’m in a coquettish feminine mood, and if I’m feeling a bit more dangerous, my choice would be the ultra sexy Rebecca Taylor leather bustier. Let me know which peplum style you fancy!

Oscars Best And Worst Dressed

In an Oscar night with few surprises and risks, strapless and peplums were the winning silhouettes and white the “it” color. For a trend as strong as color has been, and continues to be, I’m surprised the non-color trended so strong.  Gwyneth Paltrow looked stunning and uber chic (though when doesn’t she) and I applaud her choice of  the Tom Ford dress and cape — a risk that paid off big.  Another successful gamble in the evening was taken by Shailene Woodley wearing the demure, yet classic and beautiful, Valentino Spring Couture gown. Many critics thought she was to young for a long sleeve crew neck dress, but I disagree, the dress was different and refreshing.

Shades of green — mint, emerald and avocado — were the colors that took the most spins down the red carpet (Viola Davis and Bérénice Bejo) with red/orange coming in a strong second — Michelle Williams, in coral Louis Vuitton, and Emma Stone, in raspberry Giambattista Valli rocked their  gowns. I loved Jessica Chastain in Alexander McQueen, another bold choice that complemented her coloring beautifully. Sandra Bullock, Milla Jokvich and Tina Fey all chose your more “classic” gowns but were just as chic and ravishing.

In Jennifer Lopez’s chose of  Zuhair Murad for her oscar gown, one could only ask: what was she thinking?  I can’t believe a woman who has the opportunity to wear any number of spectacular gowns, chose that one! She wasn’t the only one that missed the boat, Mellisa Leo in Reem Acra and Anna Faris in Diane Von Furstenberg, certainly could have done better.

Best-clockwise from top left: Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford, Milla Jovovich in Elie Saab Spring Couture, Tina Fey in Carolina Herrera, Shailene Woodley in Valentino Spring Couture, Jessica Chastain in Alexander McQueen, Roony Mara in Givenchy, Sandra Bullock in Marchesa, Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton.

Worst- Jennifer Lopez in Zuhair Murad, Jane Seymour, Wendi McLendon Covey, Anna Faris in Diane Von Furstenberg, Lea Thompson, Mellisa Leo in Reem Acra.
